Over 98% of materials (by mass) in lead-acid batteries are currently recycled, largely possible because they are made of a standard mixture of materials enclosed in a single case.
The corrosion rate of steel rebar in concrete is typically a negligible 0.1 micrometer per year. But in cases where its outer oxide layer is breached, the steel corrodes 1000x faster.
Researchers have successfully bypassed the eyes with a brain implant that allows rudimentary vision for blind people using a 100-electrode implant in the visual cortex.
Standard organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) have an internal quantum efficiency of nearly 100%. But their external quantum efficiency, defined as the % of produced photons that escape from the device, is only around 20%.
The US Department of Energy estimates that by achieving a $60 per kWh battery price, an electric vehicle's total cost of ownership would be 26 cents per mile. Cars powered by internal combustion engines have a total cost of ownership of 27 cents per mile.
