In the Tokyo Olympics held during 2021, all of the approximately 5,000 champion medals were fully produced only using metals recovered from cell phones and other electronic waste. A total of 70 lbs. of gold, 7,700 lbs. of silver, and 4,850 lbs. of bronze was recycled in this fashion!
The first-ever USB standard was released in 1996 from an industry group started by Intel engineers, with the first mainstream application of USB being the iMac in 1998.
The lithium ions shuttling between the electrodes in a battery have over 12,000 times more mass than electrons.
The term "flash" in flashlight comes from the need for early flashlight models to "rest" because they relied on zinc-carbon batteries for power. Zinc-carbon batteries could not run at constant current for very long during this period of development.
In the USA, vehicles of all types remain in use on the road for an average of 11.9 years based on 2020 data. As an editorial note, we attribute this long life in large part due to the protective nature of the external paints and coatings that limit corrosion over time!
