This study aimed to understand the factors driving calendar aging in Li-O2 batteries. To test how the environment influences Li metal anode degradation, cells were exposed to either an inert atmosphere (Ar), O2, or ambient air. Using the EIS capabilities of the Squidstat Plus, researchers gauged how interfacial degradation of the Li metal anode impacted the bulk resistance of the cells over time. The cells kept in an inert atmosphere showed almost no increase in relative ohmic resistance, while those exposed to O2 and ambient air showed a significant increase. This resistance was even more intense when the gas was flowing.
The researchers found that the relative increase in ohmic impedance correlated strongly with the mechanical volume expansion of the Li metal anode. From this correlation, they concluded that electrolyte consumption via interfacial parasitic reactions is the main driver of the cell's volumetric expansion. To combat these effects, they demonstrated that increasing the electrolyte concentration and modifying the separator material were effective in reducing the mechanical pressure buildup and the resulting increase in resistance.
These results show how cell design and the air delivery system in a Li-O2 battery can greatly impact its performance.
